A Slip Up

Coming up on three years cancer free and I had my first slip up with sun exposure.  During a work trip to Austin the sun was shining and I found myself without sunscreen.  Those “a little vitamin D is good for me” old thoughts came up and this time I let them win.  I am sure my exposure was light each day as I walked to the convention center, but by the third day the combination had made its impact.  My new sunality has created fresh milky white skin, but has also decreased the amount of time my skin can withstand any sun exposure.  Finally the new mentality of “protect at all times” kicked in and I was able to slip over to a convenience mart to purchase some sunscreen.  The neck burn I sported when returning home from the trip was a good reminder that this is a life changing disease not a temporary adjustment.  I have to live my new sunality diligently everyday.

I am a mother of two and survivor of a very scary malignant melanoma diagnosis. I was diagnosed in my early thirties. Since that day, I have been working to change my lifestyle and incorporate sun blocking effective products into my daily life to create a new reality of living in the sun... my "sunality." I want to pass along this information to others who are facing the same lifestyle changes and challenges. You can still live a normal life and protect yourself from the deadly effects of the sun.
